NYT: McCarthy Warns Jan. 6 Committee Republicans Will Investigate Its Work

At Least Five More Examples Of McCarthy Caving To MAGA Wing

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As The New York Times reported this morning, Kevin McCarthy is indicating that the new House plans to launch an investigation into the bipartisan special committee investigating the January 6th Capitol insurrection once Republicans take control in January.

“This latest move by McCarthy against the bipartisan, highly respected January 6th select committee is just the latest evidence that the MAGA wing of the Republican Party is in the driver’s seat in the House of Representatives,” said Zac Petkanas, lead strategist for the House Accountability War Room. “It’s clearer than ever that the new House will be more focused on advancing MAGA conspiracy theories and retaliating against their supposed political enemies than doing the work the American people expect of them like lowering prescription drug costs, reducing gas prices and creating good paying jobs that can’t be shipped overseas.”

This move is part of a much larger pattern of McCarthy capitulating to the MAGA wing’s agenda.

Here are five more examples:

Caving To Demands On More Jan. 6 Conspiracy Investigations. Kevin McCarthy and Steve Scalise have both caved to Marjorie Taylor Greene and the MAGA extremists who demanded an investigation of the Jan. 6 Committee, Speaker Pelosi’s handling of Jan. 6, and the supposed mistreatment of Jan. 6 attackers.
Restoring MAGA Extremists To Committees. Despite Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar being removed from their committee assignments for espousing violence, Kevin McCarthy has promised to restore their committee assignments.
Promising To Remove Democrats From Committees. At the same time, McCarthy is planning to remove Ilhan Omar, Eric Swalwell, and Adam Schiff from their committees.
Caving To MAGA Demand For Investigation of DHS Secretary Mayorkas. In August 2021, MAGA extremists like Marjorie Taylor Greene, Matt Gaetz, Andy Biggs, Lauren Boebert, and Paul Gosar introduced a resolution to impeach DHS Secretary Mayorkas. Now that McCarthy is “facing a right-wing revolt against his campaign to become the next House speaker,” he is taking the lead of the MAGA extremists by calling on Mayorkas to resign or face impeachment proceedings.
Empowering MAGA Extremists And The House Freedom Caucus. In November 2022, House Freedom Caucus Policy Chair Rep. Chip Roy was critical of McCarthy and GOP leadership, even writing an op-ed demanding changes to GOP conference rules. With McCarthy needing more GOP support to become Speaker, McCarthy caved to Roy’s demands and “helped hone a number of rule changes” that empower individual members like the MAGA House Freedom Caucus members.
